Hey guys, on my first reef tank, having an issue which has just fallen out of any of my knowledge and research. Just hoping its not going to harm the fish.

Im running:
Nano aquarium 30cm x 30cm x 30cm (im english there for measurementally challenged xD)
Live rock/Live sand/Natural Sea Water.
Oase Biomaster 250 canister filter.

So so far things have been good I cycled the tank using ATM colony with two small clowns which up untill a couple of days was going to plan with no issues appart from never having a positive Nitrite reading and i now have a layer of Diatoms coming through.

My problem is that yesterday my filter started spitting something out. The substance in questions closest description would be skin, and a few pieces pop out every now and then.

Results of my testing using the Red Sea marine care kit:

This video was taken shortly after I put the filter back on after I checked it which is why there are quite alot of bubbles.

My filter has a prefilter then 4 trays:
first after the prefilter is a medium foam pad and floss (all spotless and gunk free)

Next it hits seachem matrix with a thin coarse pad on top it goes through two trays which are the same. (totally clean with zero visible gunk)

Last one the water goes through contains Rea Sea reef spec carbon and a bag of purigen (totally clean with no visible gunk)

PS ignore the underpants on the floor xD.

Hope somebody has advice i have just had to blast a chunk off my little hitch hiker worm as it couldn't close.

Thanks :D

It's just biofilm that is coating everything in your tank. Give it a couple weeks and it'll stop. I got that in my tank in the beginning if I turned my pump off. When it was restarted my tank would get filled with this stuff. It will stop.

It builds on the inside of the return line. When the flow stops and starts it breaks it up and sends it into the tank.

does it when the flow has not been stopped :/ pump is maxed out at 900 l/h had pieces half as big as the fish just pop out.
I will just keep an eye on it for the next couple of days.

This is a common slime which builds up like plague does in our vessels. This is similar but dislodged by water movement. While I like the concept of canister filters, it is less than ideal in a saltwater setup and provides in most cases only mechanical filtration. I would recommend a tank with overflow to a sump ( which there IS aftermarket overflows) or an addition power filter or hang on Skimmer)
I have a sea-clone 100 skimmer new in box I can sell really cheap and will assist this issue greatly. NOT saying you need it as you don't have to, but it will help. it will alleviate also inorganics and slime which typically accumulates in the tank

Very common, simply just a bacterial film that builds up in your tubes. when the flow is disturbed it breaks free. I'm more worried about the dates of your test data... how do you have data from December 10th 2018? And since when has there been a 15th and 17th month of the year?? :D

He is using military calendar....it is 10/9/18 = 9/10/2018 and 10/15/18 converted to military 15/10/18 and so forth, 10/12/18 will convert to 12/10/18- if that makes sense.

Lol, thanks for clarifying guys, I was purposefully being an ignorant self centered Yank. I didn’t really think he had parameters from the future ;)

I don't get the logic behind the american system because when you are unsure of the date, its usually the day of the month you need to know and not the month.

Yall just have to be differen't:

but not a different as them Canadians, they can only really guess the date....

But but but the majority of Americans use the dd/mm/yyyy platform. Mexicans and Brazilians are Americans too ;) Don’t question our logic, it seems we get along just fine doing it our way :p

Sorry to totally derail this thread but i figured op had his question answered
