Hi R2R, first post,
Just recently (3 weeks ago) I cleaned out my sump along with cleaning my tank sand. I have done 4 water changes. In the sump I have live rock and put fresh carbon in the return filter sock next to the bubble magus curve 5 skimmer. Since doing this I have an earthy smell (not as bad as it was) any ideas what could be causing this? Thanks.

Is your sump fully enclosed? If so, lack of air circulation in and out can cause humid air that will you give you that smell. I have the same issue as my sump is completely sealed... looking to install some PC fans soon. Don’t confuse it with the smell of ammonia though if you’re still in the cycle

Joseph, my sump has a 90cm x 30cm gap in the back to allow for venting and running cables, I have been running the tank with live rock and fish for around 5 years so should be cycled, I will try a small fan to see if there is any difference. Thanks for your reply.:)
