Compact Florescent lighting won't be enough for the clam. I would upgrading the lights or move it to a new home asap.

This + 100. There is no way to keep that clam under those lights. Maxima clams need metal halide or led! I have just over 400 watts of led on my 180 and mine is very happy halfway up in a 24" deep tank. I hate to break it to you but unless u up those lights in the next week or so, it will starve and die. I had one under vho and that is the minimum. To barely keep alive. Power compacts should be left to freshwater and fish only or softies at best.

The reason it moved is its not happy. Its looking for more light.

I already have the LEDs and other equipment needed for the upgrade, just to put it in place.

What it worries me now, is the fibrous plug it left behind when it detached itself.

While I'm not an expert if the clam detached itself, I would not sweat it.

Im not an expert either, but they can and will move. They have feet. If one attaches to a rock tho, don't try and pull it off. If you rip their feet off, they will die. You'll have to move whatever rock they attach too. Good luck. Glad you can make the lighting upgrade. You'll love it, even more than just for the clam. It's cool that you're also worried and taking steps for the well being of the clam. :)

Lately I have been occupied building a new DIY Kalk reactor using my very own tech, thus I have been lazy adding the LED retrofit, it's all ready to go but need to plan a few hours during the night to get it done.

Also all the corals and inverts in the tank, including the little Maxima are doing fine. BTW, after sending them photos got a full refund from LA, many thanks for the advice (they took down the old picture/description).

Found the following information related to lighting for clams, and tank depth from Barry Neigut at wetwebmedia:

...In aquariums less than 20†deep, you could also utilize compact fluorescent (PC) and VHO bulbs. Keep in mind that the different species will dictate the lighting requirements. For example, Tridacna crocea and Tridacna maxima require more intense lighting than the other species. Smaller Tridacnids, and those with brown mantles do not require as much light as those with colorful mantles.

Decent information. But in my experience vho at a minimum.


Also when you install the new lights you will need to run them less or less intensity for the photoperiod or you will burn your acros. Or they will bleach.

I agree with pickupman, you need more lighting than what you have even though that article says you may be fine.
