I, like many of us, was under the impression that corals of the same species can get along. Well, this doesn't seem to apply to scolys... or at least these 2. unnamed1.jpg
And for those of you that may think that the bleeding apple may have been able to fend off the attack, here's the morning after...

That was an expensive lesson in reefing...
I would love to hear from others if this is unique to scolys or is it just that these 2 weren't meant for each other.

Are they from different locations? Australia and Indonesia?
Not that I’m aware of… the purple scoly does have a different texture though.
Crocodile Island scolys are known to attack other scolys, but the purple one I have doesn’t look like a croc island species.

It looks a lot like the texture on the purple one I have… here’s a different angle, and you can see the texture difference 553C0B95-B23A-4270-AAE3-7FFE10D1968C.jpeg
My bet is that they are different species, and likely croc island.

That’s an incredible picture that you got of your scoly attaching another!

Keep in mind that there are 5 major Scoly groups and they can get along WITH EXTREME CAUTION. They are like any other coral that could wake up on the wrong side of the bed with an angry stinkface. I would not normally keep Scolys from different groups too close. And… yes, I believe our orange id to be a Vitiensis.

  • Scolymia australis.
  • Scolymia cubensis.
  • Scolymia lacera.
  • Scolymia vitiensis.
  • Scolymia wellsii.

Scolys are by far my favorite coral. I’ve enjoyed taking pictures of the many beauties they offer besides what we see at a quick glance…
