Softy tank and skimmer

starting a 65 gallon softy dominated tank with a 20 gallon sump. My question is: is a skimmer nesessary.?

Regardless of tank stocking, a skimmer is not necessary. It is simply a nutrient export tool. Fish only systems, softie tanks, or full blown mixed reefs can run with or without them.

It is however a very effective piece of equipment. I'd bet >90% of reefers use one.
