And to OP, great move on saving that shell! I believe pyramid snails also eat regular snails (I think) so that may be why all your snails are dead.

Idk... I have seen them attack new healthy snails within 5 minutes of adding them to my tank several times. Only the larger blue legs do it.

Thanks for your insight and link to Skinz post! I got a Crocea clam a few weeks ago and was looking for hints on how to get it to attach to a surface (it keeps topling over). I meandered over to this thread and learned all about these nasty parasites! I looked at my clam carefully and did not see any snails on or under it, but there were lots of them on my Astrea snails and a few on a couple of turbo snails. Looks like an eradication program is in order before they spread to the clam!

I've been wat hing my tank armed with flashlight and magnifying glass for 5 days now. Although i did find a couple of ting pyramid snails on its foot I haven't seen anymore anywhere. Maybe they were already there when i purchase it. I'm beginning to think it might have been the coral beauty. However, since i didn't know about those snails they would have eventually killed him anyway. So i guess there was a lesson or two myself and a few other people came away with.

Can you dip clams (i was told not to) if so, will doing so kill pyramid snail and their larve if its there?

It takes a lot of snails to kill a clam. Dipping them doesn't do much for the snails, it just stresses out the clam and could kill it. Manual removal is the only way other than the occasional Wrasse such as a Yellow Coris may eat them.

I found a limpit type snail that was eating my clams a little at a time, I had six so the grazing wasn't too bad but enough to irk me. Found him at night with a flashlight. I know someone who pulls his clam (65lbs) out of his tank and hoses it off every once in a while. Still alive.

Yep, Kevins, it's huge. This pic was taken in 2009.

So then it had to be the coral beauty or one of the tangs... This is good and bad. Good cuz i dont have a pyramid problem, bad because it's one of my fish. Actually it's between the yellow tang and coral beauty. I forgot that my pb tang is in qt again. His home away from home :-( He's easily stressed by the yellow tang. They fight over this "ruin" in the tank but the yellow tang always wins. I guess the pb doesn't realize he's twice as big as his foe! There are many hiding places big enough for either of them but the ruin is the shizz!!

I stopped buying clams for the same reason, crabs were eating them.

I've had a couple of clams, one almost two years, and the other several months, and haven't had any issues with hermits bothering them. I think you may have another preditor.
