Sponge in Overflow - keep or toss?

So this sponge has been growing in my overflow. Should I keep it or lose it? Afraid if I scrape it it will end up in sump. It’s about a 2” diameter.

you could turn off the return pump then scrape it so you don't have to flowing into sump. You could also just leave it alone, unlikely to cause any harm.
