These sponges are growing pretty well in my tank. I think there might be about 3~4 different kinds. They must be eating something to grow so I'm guessing they are contributing to the nutrient uptake one way or another. Well, I hope they are. I also read somewhere (in the past, I don't remember where exactly) that sponges can alter the bacteria makeup and biodiversity of a saltwater tank by hosting nitrifying and denitrifying bacteria that are different from ones growing elsewhere such as live rock. I'm not sure if this is true or not but I like the sound of that. It would be nice if I could add more variety but I have yet to find LFS that sells sponges here. I might ask if I can get some off the live rocks when they bring them in.
