I recently picked up a couple live rocks with yellow sponges. They came out of the seller's sump. I put them in to my DT, but now the sponge is turning grey. I think this has to do with flow. They are in shaded spots with less flow. Should I take them out an put them in my sump, or let nature run it's course? I hear yellow encrusted sponges may be toxic???

Take rock out and scrub away sponge with toothbrush and peroxide and rinse in tank water in a separate bucket before returning to the tank
Yellow sponge generally contains toxins
Wear gloves when handling

Yikes! So nothing beneficial? What about

Yikes! So nothing beneficial? What about filtration etc?

Also, what about the hitchhikers in the rock, won’t they be harmed by the peroxide?

I just torn up my whole tank to clean and reset with a new plan. Found a "yellow sponge" on a rock and thought...cool! Now it's sitting at the top of my rock pile exposed to plenty of flow and light because I think it's interesting.

And yet the comments above are ominous. Can anyone provide photos references to sponge types and why they are good or bad?

Maybe I've got the wrong idea.

Below is a shot of mine.
