I just got an awesome blue squamosa from DD...it's loosely attached to a plug. Is it okay if I cut it off & place it on my rockwork? It's not it's foot it's just a few of those "strings" (excuse the term) that they attach with. Has anyone done this successfully? Last thing I want to do is injure it. Thanks in advance.

I just got two from them too. One of mine cut its own byssal threads and moved off of its plug. You can cut the threads close to the plug without doing harm to the clam. It is best to use fine scissors or an Exacto knife.

I was planning on using a razor blade, how about the other one? Did you cut it or is it still on the plug?

I just moved it for the "photo shoot" so it may be a little retracted. Had it for about a week now, seems pretty well acclimated to my tank so tomorrow night I'm going to cut the byssal threads, move it to it's new "home" & hope it reattaches real quick

Oh you got the pretty one that they had posted about a week or so ago, very nice! I almost pulled the trigger on that one.

Tell ya what. I'll pay for you to send it to my house, I'll cut the glands for you. Let it heal for a couple of years maybe 10 in my reef and then send it back (maybe) deal? Haha. Nice pickup.

The dangdest thing happened to the one that cut its threads. It is now back on its frag plug. While it was off, I noticed that the plugs were slightly dished. I'll post pics tomorrow (after 2am here).

46gReef,
I saw your clam on DD and I actually had it in my cart for half a day when you bought it. I bought the two that were posted right after yours.

Sorry about that! Did you get that really nice one for $199? And I know what your saying regarding the frag plugs, they have a divot in them.....

I got one off of a rock by just taking the back of a knife blade (not the sharp edge) and lightly stroking the bands (strings). After a short time the clam simply let go.... No cutting... No damage. It reattached in a couple of days to the rock that I wanted it on. I say don't cut if you don't have to. Try to coax it into letting go first.

I haven't done anything yet, before I cut I'll give that a try, thanks Lisa.
