I have a prefab stand with a shelf under the tank, and then doors for the compartment. The issue that has now occurred is that the sump bought is about .5" from the bottom of the shelf. In order for me to access the innards of the sump, I had to install rails and placed the sump on a platform so that it would pull out easily. The problem is that the shelf is STILL an issue; calculations and measurements came out wrong for whatever reason. I cut out a portion thinking that would gain some easier access, (sloppy mind you, I'm no master craftsman) but it has not helped. Either way, the shelf is in the way. The shelf needs to go.
Is it detrimental to the stand's stability if I remove the shelf? If it is, how can I remove the shelf and maintain the stability of the stand?

The only issue I can see is that the shelf is keeping the stand from "racking", moving side to side. Is there a back on the stand? If so how is it attached? And I agree a picture would help a lot.

I agree I would take it out. The weight of your tank should be on the 4 outer sides. Most stans with sumps don't have any type of shelves. But a picture would be key in determining a definite answer

I have never encountered a situation, where the shelf was integral to the structure. Generally, a cabinet or closet needs shelves and they must be supported by the structure, not the other way around.

I have battery issues, currently recharging, forgot to do that the other day.

But here is the exact stand, with a 40 breeder instead of this 65g. :

The upper portion to the back is a very flimsy cardboard-like material. Where the compartment is there are two boards on the left and right. But the middle is open.
I would say remove the shelf and see how the stand "feels". If you feel and flimsiness you can support it a bit better. Like I said earlier "racking" would be my biggest concern. If it seems to wobble side to side you could cut a piece of plywood to attach to the back of the stand to sturdy things back up.
