I am about to build an aquarium stand for an IM 14 peninsula and am wondering if I should build it wider than the tank footprint? The tank is 12x20X13, if I make the stand 35" high I am afraid the tank and stand will be top-heavy and unstable. debating building it 14-15" wide. Looking for additional input, am I being paranoid or??? Pic below isn't mine but is an example of the IM 14 on the APS stand.

Of course making it wider than the tank will offer more stability but probably not necessary, you could keep your ATO container in the bottom of stand to add weight and help keep it more stabile.

Stability come from a few different things. Weight displacement and shear are the easiest for stands. Building it to whatever height you want, keeping something in the base to equal weight, but using heavier building supplies for stability and doors/panels for shear strength. This is a stand I built for a 50g tank... i used 4x4's for the corners, lots of screws, and good osb and ply for shear strength.

On a tank that size having a bigger footprint stand would help if you want to store things under it. Are you wanting it to be open like your example of their aluminum stand, or do you want it enclosed?
