While starting my build I was planning on building a custom stand. The height wanted with features and room where wanted. I quickly realized my plan of bare 2x4 (hoping tank is a 6-9 month temp to do some remodel work) wouldn't pass inspection. Found a pine stand in cl and thought that will work for now. It fits my sump and skimmer, barely, and will just make me think harder for my next set up. My question is after looking at the plans and threads with everyone's custom built " can park a tank ( the ones the army uses) in it, the store bought ones are almost a little scary. Seems like all the weight is sitting on 1/4" of wood. Now I saw a full tank on this stand so I'm not freaking out yet but it was set up for fresh water. I know stuff happens but am I being paranoid or should I not worry about it.

There is no need to worry if using a manufacturer's stand that is matched with their aquarium. My 180 sits on the type of stand that you describe. From looking at it you wouldn't think the stand could support the weight. Make sure the stand is level and you'll be fine. The only thing I have against store bought stands is that they are a little too short in my opinion.

There are a lot of good plans available if you decide to do a DIY stand.

it really depends on your need, some prefab stands have a limited space available for a sump, you would have to get the right size to fit inside the stand. so if you custom build a stand you are in control of all dimensions and features that might determine your setup

i built mine with some simple face framing on the front, back, and top. The sides are then stainable grade plywood to match the face frame wood. With the left over 8 ft sheet of plywood I made a door with some veneer siding to cover up the layers. Here are some pictures.
