The Starry Pufferfish is a spectacular large marine puffer native to the tropical Indo-Pacific. It is recognized by its rounded body, pale coloration, and dense pattern of dark spots that give it a starry appearance. This species is intelligent and inquisitive, often learning to recognize its keeper, but it becomes very large, making it suitable only for experienced aquarists with substantial aquarium space. An aquarium of 300 gallons or larger is recommended for an adult, with strong filtration, excellent oxygenation, open swimming space, and sturdy rockwork that provides caves and shelter. Maintain temperatures around 74–80°F, salinity of 1.023–1.026, and a pH of 8.1–8.4. The Starry Pufferfish is generally best kept in a fish-only system, as it will readily consume crustaceans, mollusks, snails, and other invertebrates and may bite corals. Its diet should consist of varied Gamma meaty foods such as clams, mussels, shrimp, squid, crab, and other marine seafood, with hard-shelled foods offered regularly to help wear down its continuously growing teeth. Because puffers can produce significant waste, oversized filtration and frequent water changes are important. With excellent husbandry and adequate space, the Starry Pufferfish can become a fascinating, long-lived centerpiece for a large marine aquarium.
