Starting Again - if...

I had a nice aquarium some years ago and want to start another. I capitulated and gave away my last reef tank because the hang-on-back refugium I made came apart and leaked all over the floor. My Girlfriend was fairly bent about this, but I had a cleaner come out and fix it. It happened a second time, and that is where I gave in and gave up the tank. This all happened because the glue I used did not hold. apparently I used the wrong stuff.

10+ years later, I want a new tank. Tech changed significantly and I know exactly what I want, how to build it, and how to maintain it. The problem is, and this is where I am sure some of you are going to think one of the following:

1. What an idiot! (Please contain laughter... )
2. What does this have to do with this forum?
3. Some form of sympathy and hopefully some constructive advice.

So, the question is: How do I talk my girlfriend into allowing me to build a new tank?

My answers to the above are: 1) Yeah, I am an idiot. And honestly, I can see some humor in this if it were someone else.
2) Everything! I am sure I am not the only one to face the approval (or disapproval) of your significant others.

She's your girl friend not your wife. If something leaks and it will, your flipping the bill, not her.

She should also support your interest and hobbies.

If your were married and had joint account's you could tell her your new hobby is going to be a $30K Harley or a reef tank :)

The next time you go shopping , to a play, a chick flick, etc. with her - watch her try on shoes for example. Just say to yourself , Yep , getting my tank and it cant be as bad for her as this is for me. The point is: We all put up with the significant others "stuff" - its a relationship . Not a dictatorship. I also agree with comment in red above.
