As the title states...

would it be better to start a brand new tank with live or dry sand??

my rock is all dry macro rock but I’m putting a marine pure block that has been marinating in the sump for 2 years as well as some live rock from someone’s tank...

Sand doesn't matter as much as the rock does. If you want the full live sand effect get some from KP or gulfliverock
