Steel stand questions

Hello! So I am replacing the rickety wooden stand for my 75. Am going to fab with steel. Being around salt water, what is the preferred finish? Was thinking powder coat. Has anyone tried Cerakote...used for firearms?. Thanks!

I believe a majority of steel stands are either primed and painted or power coated. I am not aware of anyone using Cerakote on a stand but this does not mean it hasn't happened. Could be a great application for it. Do you plan on spraying it yourself or having it done?

Thanks. Actually, I would have to hire someone for the finish. I've been pretty set on the powder coat. The Cerakote just popped in my mind. Super tough stuff, but a 4ft stand may be too much money

It would be very cool though! A price of $180 per test kit is not bad. Especially when considering they include the HVLP gun, which looks somewhat cheap. This leads me to believe the product may not be much more than powder coating. There are a number of certified applicators in and around Phoenix. Probably worth a call. Additionally, if you're a good ideas man, you may want to contact the company and sell them on the idea of letting you use and review their product for the aquarium hobby. In return, perhaps they'll comp you getting the stand done. Just some thoughts...

You could paint and seal with bowling alley wax or butchers wax. When I make steel frames for tables. After I paint them I seal them with the wax. So nothing penetrates. and if it gets a mark you can always reapply the wax

Ssshhhhhhhh... I'm trying to talk him into getting the Cerakote! Lol

Cerakote actually scratches to base metal easily, just keep that in mind. I'd take it to an industrial powder coater, the automotive/bike places just use cheap stuff you can get from Eastwood's. Industrial places will use an actual oven to cure it vs ir heat lamps

Lol cerakote is soooooo expensive bc it has to be dipped. That's a big vat to dip a stand. Powder coat is good. But even if you do that I'd still try to seal it with a wax. Bc one little nick or pin hole in the powder coat rush will form and spread under the coating and eventually flake off in big pieces.
