Steel stand thickness

Hi all,

Im planning my steel stand like the sketch attached. My aquarium is 178cmx50cmx50cm, 10mm glass, euro braced.
Do you guys think a 5x5cm square tube of 1.5mm thickness is ok?

I think the square tube specs in inches are: 2x2" and 0.065 thickness

That’s ~15g steel. Depending on height, that is fine for several tons in compression on the verticals. I would add a center vertical in the rear and gusset.

That’s technically fine but I would check cost difference going up to 12g(2.656mm). Joints will be much stronger with less worries about any corrosion or pinholes as time goes on.
 
Check with your tank manufacturer whether they recommend support at corners or to include mid span supports.

The risk of adding the middle support if the tank is designed to be supported at the corners is if it’s like even 1/2mm above the plane once floor leveling factors in of the base then you risk almost half the tank load landing on that one post, with the forces going through the glass where the manufacturer wasn’t planning.

This can be mitigated a bit if some sort of compressible mat is used under (rimless tanks only) but only if the product is manufacturer recommended.

I'm using a 19mm Valchromat (Water resitent mdf) on top of the stand plus a 5mm EVA.
 
With vertical supports would be something like this.
