HI, Im going to build a steel stand for my rimless glass aquarium, measuring 40"x 20" x 24" using 1.5" square tubing 1/8" thick.,Will it be enough to support the weight of the aquarium plus water? .Do you you think its an overkill by putting the front and back middle uprights? Thanks.(The height should read 24" instead of 36") ........................................................................................................................................................

Nope not an overkill. I think it will be just fine.

Use 2x2x250 HSS and forget about the center pieces. I used 3x3x250 due to tank size.

Building a stand as will but using 6063 aluminum 2x2x.125 for a 30x24x20 tank. I’m putting in the braces just because I can’t get thicker aluminum. Have steel as well but only 30” should be strong enough but will put a center brace like your design.

So there is no need to put braces at the ends. As you can see the stand is not very high so I think there is fewer chance of deflections, right?

In the event that this helps. Free autocad software that appears to do stress simulations.

Thanks for your help. I built the stand from 1.5" x !.5" x 1/8" square tubing. The measurements are 39"x20"x24". The aquarium is W 39"x D20"xH 36". Should I put

diagonals at both ends or there is no need? Thanks

I do not think the stress analysis is active in the hobbyist version of the software.

No need for gussets what so ever.

Thanks for your your help. Coming from experts like yourself puts my mind at ease as regards the safety factor. I much appreciate it. Once again thanks.
Make sure to give a couple good coats of primer before final color application. I had to redo one as the typical paint chipped in spots and with a marine environment rusts in an instant, does not effect strength, just appearance. I would or will powdercoat my next one, its not that expensive and other than not handling an impact will not come off easily.
