I have a friend that does some farming and he said that he would give me a couple of the 250 gallon plastic resivours with the metal cages around them but they have had fertalizers and other chemicals in them. Is there any way that I could clean them out so I could use them for my rodi and saltwater containers?

FWIW, you do not likely need sterilizing, you need cleaning.

How to clean it best will depend on exactly what was in it.

Do you know, or can you find out?

If it was Round Up I don't think I would try it. Round Up is extremely toxic to marine life at very low levels. It even carries a warning on the label stating so.

Round Up is some nasty stuff... I wouldn't put that anywhere near my tank...

Now if it was car wash barrels or vet grade peroxide, etc those can be washed.

The chemical in Roundup might not soak into the plastic much, but I agree that it may not be worth the risk as it may not be just a matter of cleaning the plastic surface, but getting it out of the plastic as well.
