Phil started on live AM radio, roles out a story and then listeners would call in to argue. (I heard my land lady call him in Los Angeles - arguing about his “guests” that night- genius fake out.)

No, Phil is a real host, his "guests" are voices, the script is designed to draw folks listening in. The original "live" ( on radio, just Phil) show was aimed to get live call in reactions to his fake guests and their wild stories. Like War of the Worlds, theatre, but designed to elict a call in response from folks who were drawn into the drama.

Guest call up a radio show featuring a guest Star Wars Character and trying to argue why Chewy should be shot, or not, for a made up infraction. All prank, but real folks get drawn in to argue over nonsense, and they don't realize that it was all one guy, no guests, and fake story line.

The fun was waiting for the callers responses, but the stories were also fun.
