I’m looking for ideas on fish stocking for my new 200 gallon tank. Total system volume should be in the neighborhood of 400 gallons. The tank will be a mixed reef. I’m a ways out due to work always getting in the way. Probably won’t leak test until end of October beginning of November.

The current system is 60 gallons with 2x clowns, dottyback, coral beauty, and Melanurus wrasse. This tank will be relocated to the basement fish room once the new tank is stabilized 6-12 months.

These are some of what I have been thinking of adding, but would love some additional ideas for an active reef.

Fairy wrasse
Mystery wrasse
Goby/ pistol shrimp
Foxface rabbit or scribble
Naso tang
Midas blenny
Sailfin tang
Lawnmower blenny

Tanks been in the works for well over a year and a half. I’m getting excited to finish it up.

Does anyone have any ideas on fish combos that would work with the above stocking?

What type of corals are you going to have? Rabbitfish and Foxface do like to eat mushrooms. I like to add small puffers, they make a very interesting fish to have in a reef. I also went with a trio of Orchard Dottybacks in my reef.

Corals I have now run the gamut from hammers, acros, gonis, mushrooms, and zoas. Few different SPS and a lot of soft corals. The new tank will be much of the same. I didn’t realize that rabbit fish ate mushrooms. I had one 15-16 years ago in my 125 and didn’t notice them picking. All fish have their own personalities. I did have issues with an emperator tearing up my soft corals back then.

Puffers like a Toby? I like puffers and would love to have one. How are they with clean up crews and shrimp?

Yes, Toby or any of the smaller sharp nose puffer. I had a couple without any issues, and I know others that didn't either. I think if you went with one of the larger one you could have some issues, but the smaller ones are pretty safe.

I have had a fox face for a year in a tank with a lot of different mushrooms and he doesn't bother with them t all.
