im upgrading from a 55 to a 220 and keeping the old tank up any longer than it needs to be is not an option, the 55 needs to turn into a qt as getting permission for a 220 was hard enough i won't be able to have a third tank in the house. the only thing that truly worries me is i have a yellow tang (reason for upgrading) and i fear i'll never be able to add another tang if he is in there first. any suggestions would be great.

Agreed. Having plenty of places to hide and use a social acclimation box. Also, add multiple tangs at once if you keep them in odd numbers, it'll help.

Odd numbers is an old saw, but once you get past 3, I never found odd or even to make much difference. Adding more than one new tang at a time does help to diffuse aggression though. How large is the YT? That will make a difference too. My YT isn't all that aggressive but my PT is a homicidal demon …. so I've a clown tang in QT to give it some competition LOL.

I was saying to keep them in odd numbers. So add 2 more or 4 more to keep at 3 or 5, but I trust @ca1ore's knowledge over mine. Just be sure to add more than 1 for your next addition.
