Strawberry hermit crabs

Our 11 year old asked to get some hermit crabs. Our marine tank wasn’t suitable for them so we decided on land hermits for him. After loads and loads of research...by him and us, we were just going to get the small ones from a pet shop. Then we found the strawberry hermit crabs. We had to order them and get them shipped from Cairns in Queensland....and we are in Melbourne. We decided to get two and put our order in and waited. They were delivered to our lfs -Williamstown Aquarium during the week and we went this morning to get them. Introducing Cherry and Nugget.

Land hermit crabs were one of the few pets I've never owned, Those look amazing, much better than what most chain stores get. Your kid is lucky. Keep us updated with how they do!

Thanks I really had no clue they were going to be sooooo big and strong but at least we can handle these ones, unlike the pet shop ones. I joked that if they get too big we will have them for dinner...think I may have scarred the kids with that one

They are 9 years old and started out dime sized. Now they each almost cover the palm of my hand.

Wow! Here’s a pic of them in their home, under our sons loft bed. Got them a 3’ tank, substrate is cocofibre mixed with sand, 50w heat lamp. Still a few more things to add to their home but will do them for a while.

Mine love plain Cheerios as a treat.

So far they have had a dried fruit hermit mix, the little hermit rings and diced carrot. These guys need to have a diet high in caratine to keep their red colouring, but are also omnivores so can have tuna, chicken and other meats too.
