I noticed my clownfish had a whiteish brown thing hanging off of him. It’s not as thin and stringy as some of the other pictures I have googled about the matter.

This is my first tank / fish, it’s just a pair of clowns and a small CUC in the tank right now. I’ve only had them in there for a couple of weeks but everything seems to have been going smoothly so far. The first couple of weeks they would only eat frozen spirulina brine shrimp, I have just the last couple of days tried to introduce PE saltwater flakes for one of their meals so I am wondering if the change in diet might be the cause here.

That's poop. Should come out once it's finished.

It indeed looks like poop. the other options would be a prolapsed cloaca (does not look like this), a parasite, Sometimes it can also be eggs. However- as already said - it looks like poop. I might switch back from the dry flakes to a less concentrated food for a day or two - like you said - its probably related to the change in food

This is Poop but likely blended wih mucus from within puffing it up.
If you are feeding Mysis shrimp, brine shrimp or both, you will see this for sure. Feed other foods such as Marine cuisine and LRS fish frenzy and you will see a difference in poop color and consistency

PS - I mentioned the other things merely because this is a common question - and those are some of the things it could be. Glad everything 'came out ok':)

I’m happy you did, it’s good to know all the possibilities for the future
