So my question is why would one do water changes if stability is met? I dose amines, alkalinity, calcium and my nitrates and phosphates are in a nice desirable range. Why would I do a water change and possibly change any of the perameters? This is a genuine question because I have not done a water change in 2 weeks and havent seen a need to yet.

I think the easy answer is to replenish trace elements. Unless you also dosing all the traces.

That is a good question. Now If we could get some who never does them to chime in. There are people who don’t by the way.

I do them but I am now at every 3 weeks, and soon will be doing them monthly until I set up AWC. If everything is happy, I think it’s unnecessary

I guess it depends on what kind of coral you are keeping. Are you dosing magnesium at all? There are so many major and minor trace elements that you would have to dose that a water change takes care of. There are a few different systems that people use to dose everything, but then typically they do an ICP test monthly to monitor those levels to determine their dosing needs.

My water changes are mostly for detritus clean up. If I don't change at least 10% a month I get tons of detritus in the overflow sump or sand bed. In the long run (3+ years) these detritus traps can cause all kinds of problems so it is best to stay on top of them.
