I’m currently cycling my Innovative Marine 75 INT tank with RFS 27 sump. The water that comes down into the sump currently drains through a filter sponge, and then three different 4” filter socks - then it goes towards the space where a protein skimmer goes and then the return pump / ATO chamber.

My question is regarding the three different 4” filter socks slots. I am thinking the first slot I can place a Red Sea NanoMat fleece roller. Then the second slot I can place a filter sock, and then the third slot place a media bag with some type of bio filter (bio balls / cubes).

Is this appropriate? I’ve been out of the hobby for over a decade and jumping back in.

I wish I would have thought to put a nano mat into my IM 75 when I had it. I have a IM 170 now.

The only possible limiting factor could be the cost of replacement rolls if they only lasts a week or two. The roller mat is only rated up to around 50 gallons, and yours will probably be closer to 80 gallons with the sump.
If it works though, I’d do it!

I think your plan for the other two sock areas should work well.

Id lose the sox and add some live rock rather than media.
Wait on the roller mat until you have a nutrient export problem.
I run no mech filtration, my fuge area is unlit with live rock.

Im new myself still but I also optioned to the unlit sump route with maybe 20lbs of rock from the display after it established itself. Much slower process and is only a 20 long sump but that water was crystal clear. I recently moved and I believe im encountering a "good bacteria" bloom. I had chemipure in the return pump location, 2 x 4" drain holes with the sponge filers filter cut and formed to a media cup. My water is now super "dusty" looking. Not cloudy but dusty. I just got some cheap filter socks from Amazon and will see what those may do. I'd bet that roller would work great in place of socks. Nothing wrong with mechanical filtration though. Always seems like a certian thing.
