suggestions please

finally got my parents to realize they need a protein skimmer in their 90 gallon reef that has nine fish (3 chromis, 2 clowns, 2 cardinals, a 6 line wrasse and a royal gamma) and six different corals. long story short they bought all the equipment about twelve years ago and within the last two finally set everything up. I don't think there is much room to even put a skimmer in the sump they have now (will attach pictures later today as I'm not currently home) so I'm wondering what your suggestion are for me regarding their sump setup and what skimmer they should get. I've thought about taking an empty 20 gallon I have lying around and creating a new sump but it's taking me this long to finally convince them to get a skimmer so not sure if I can get them to realize the benefits of having the bigger sump and everything I could do with that. any suggestions would be awesome and again I'll post any pictures anyone wants later today. thank you

Talk them into a bigger sump, try and find a used one so you don't have to pay full price. Or get a 40 breeder at petco.
It's well worth it to have the right skimmer. Don't skimp on that.

you don't think I would be fine making something out of this empty 20 gallon tank I have would work? but then again I also thought I did enough convincing on the skimmer and found out I was wrong, so thinking I may just start letting things get worse, but that's for a whole another topic and different forum lol

but yes I try keeping it and everything else clean

yea you could make a 20 work, skimmer/pump only. is that thing bigger than the 20? you could repurpose that and add some live rock.

There are many good HOB skimmers out there that may work for the light bio-load your talking about. What type of corals do they have? Unless they are getting into SPS heavy reefing, they won't need much of a PS and maybe not even a new sump? FFT

so thank you everyone for trying to help I guess my parents, or father isn't ready to spend the money on their aquarium right and as this isn't the place for me to complain about my life. I need ways, if there are any free or inexpensive ways to decrease their nitrites. It got over 60 and I have gotten them down to around 35 last time I checked but can't seem to get them less then that. They were elevated because my Mom started feeding them (way over fed them) and I wasn't able to keep up on water changes because of my health issues. Before this happened it never got above 20. I was obviously hoping they would help me and start upgrading their plumbing equipment but that isn't going to happen anymore apparently. so I'm not what sure to do anymore, thanks again for the help!!
