Mine is simple... water comes in from tank into filter sock, flows over the baffle into one single chamber that houses the skimmer and return pump. I wish I had a refugium but space doesn’t allow. I put a small breeder box in the sump with a light and macro algae in it but what happened is I have hair algae growing in the sump because of the light. Either way, it serves the same purpose. But my sump has two chambers.... that’s it.

Oh.... it’s a Somatic 60 with the skimmer that goes with it.

I use a sump basically as a refuguim to protect macro algaes from the critters.

Three things to setup on a sump

1) insure during power out you don't get floods.
2) insure things return to normal with power return.
3) if the drain gets blocked or fails, insure the sump runs dry before the upper container floods.

If the tank is not drilled you can make an effective, safe overflow with $20 (or so) of PVC pipe.
