I recently got a 37gal tank with a 10gal sump, I feel like I don’t have all the right equipment and need some ideas. I’m new to larger tanks, any ideas are welcome. Current setup is a nanomat,filter floss and a carbon bag. Heater is in main display because it’s too long

Also, I can't tell if your filter floss is contained or if it's just floating?
You typically want the water to be forced through the mechanical filtration before it goes into other parts of your sump.

Floating, im just starting the tank im about to start the overflow system, no fish still cycling some water in the main tank

I don't think that will be effective at all, as was mentioned already floss or socks are meant to have water forced through them.
 
I don't use fleece rollers, so maybe I'm wrong, but shouldn't the water from the overflow flow through the fleece roller for it to be effective? Assuming the fleece roller is working correctly, you can definitely ditch the floating floss. As mentioned, just floating the floss is ineffective, and even if it was effective in theory the fleece roller and the floss are occupying the same role, so I think one or the other. You don't need to overdue mechanical filtration in my opinion, a lot of successful reefers including Josh Earle from World Wide Corals don't run mechanical at all.

And, just floating the bag of carbon will definitely do a little, but it's not nearly as effective as having the water flow through the bag of carbon. I see you have a 3-way Tee and valve on your return line, consider buying or DIY'ing a simple media reactor which could be fed with a hose from that Tee, and run your carbon in that.

You probably have enough filtration with the fleece roller (idk; who's to say; I also don't use one) but I just want to say the reason for my skimmer rec is the ph bump alone (if that's a goal). Upgrading to a new larger skimmer had such a ph increase for me it's hard for me to ignore going forward. Best of luck
 
That return doesn’t look plumbed correctly. It should be where the roller is. Does the roller have an inlet for the return. I would pull the filter floss imo.

Don't run this tank without GFCI protection, we cannot stress this enough!

I would encourage you to consult with a qualified local electrician and have them replace that outlet with one that is GFCI protected. This is an important safety feature everyone should be observing 🙂

I'm thinking about things like salt creep.
 
I don’t have anywhere else to plug into, reccomendations?
Can we get a photo of this area as viewed from directly in front of the outlet?

— assuming that moving the tank over or moving the outlet over is out of the question; it is possible that plumbing could be redone to offer more outlet clearance, allowing you to use a GFCI outlet with “in use” weather resistant cover (side hinged)…

You are correct! As someone who does use a rollermat (for convenience sake) the overflow pipe should be going into the rollermat 1st chamber. As @Fish Fan mentioned, ditch the filter floss. It’s doing nothing in that application.

As also mentioned, the outlet is of great concern. Can you move the tank over so that outlet isn’t so close to the “wet” zone. One bit of spray or spill and you’re going to have a bad time. Also it takes all of 10 minutes to install a GFCI outlet and for the $25 investment it will save your life.
