So looking to add a sump to my 40 gal breeder. I can’t drill. So was going with a life reef overflow but which one 1 or 2 drains. As for sump looking at pro clear eco reef or a trigger V2. Does it really matter on which one. Flex or pvc and what return pump. I believe both with sumos are under 30 gal. Just looking for info.

I don't know about the Life Reef HOB overflow, but I believe the most trusted HOB overflows are the ones from Eshopps.

In my opinion, any HOB overflow can fail and cause a flood, so make sure you're getting a reliable HOB overflow 🙂

You really want at least a two drain "Herbie" system, where one drain is an emergency drain in case the first gets clogged. Even better is a three drain "Bean Animal" style overflow, which is even more redundant.

Good luck!

I think redundant drains are always a good idea, but my understanding was that the most common failure mode for HOB overflows is a siphon break during a power loss, leading to a failure to drain when power is restored, causing an overflow, and not the drains in the HOB itself.
