I currently have a 100 gallon reef and i am not using a sump. I have a remora skimmer with a overflow box and a mag 5 pump. Everything has been doing great . My question is why would i benifit from having a sump?

A sump adds to your total water volume. It also houses all the equipment that most like to keep out of sight (skimmer, heater, etc). In my opinion, it also greatly improves the oxygenation of water due to it going down to the sump and being pumped back into the main tank. I highly recommend them.

Its also a place you can set up a refugium if you want to. Good for dosing as well so it has a chance to mix/dilute without the risk of high concentrations hitting and damaging coral.

Thanks for the info. I just don't know if i want to go with a overflow box . I would rather have a reef ready tank but this is what i have and it seems to be working okay.

Every tank is different. If yours "ain't broke" don't mess it up for the sake of being like everyone else. Truth is, none of us are like everyone else, there is no standard way.

I ran my first reef tank with an overflow box and a small sump. Had great success but if your tank is doing good then I'd leave it as stated above.

Thanks for the info I do believe in keeping things simple. My tank seems to be working okay like it is.

I do believe to just try and do what is comfortable with you. I am running a AC 101 on a 75 gallon tank just a Niger trigger and mushrooms in it. Ecerything was alot better until I made the mistake of putting a Anenome crab in there. Lost a Duncan coral, 20 zoo polyps, star polyps. So filtration wasn't the issue with my tank that day. I do havea 75 gallon reef ready tank as well just have to see who comes out ahead.
