Sump

Setting up a 20 gallon long sump. My protein skimmer will be in the first chamber. How high should my first baffle be? The skimmer says 7 to 9 inches. Do I go 9 inches? The max I can go with a 20 gallon long is 10.5 inches

I would personally go with the sweet spot in the middle at 8 inches. To be safest, you should go on the higher side. You can always make a small stand to lift the skimmer out of the water if need be, on the other hand, if you make the chamber too shallow... well you can't go any deeper...

I would go 9" and make a stand or just adjust the output of the skimmer to find its sweet spot.

Another question with sump. I'm using acrylic baffles. Will aquarium safe silicone be good enough or I need to get something else to bond acrylic to glass

Personally I would use glass because silicone doesn't bond well to acrylic. I've seen people do it but not sure how long it will hold up.

If you already have the acrylic just use them, your sump is only 20 gallons. I have a 30G sump with acrylic baffles with no problem. I used the RTV silicone that most people use to seal tanks, works great. I think you only need to worry about using glass baffles when you get to larger sumps due to increased pressure.
