I don't know how many of you are familiar with this unit, from Santa Monica Filtration. I stumbled upon it, and took a chance ordering one. They are a really great algae scrubber. Mine has been humming along for a week, and is starting to show some growth. I'm hoping for results like those I've seen posted on the web. For years, I've always believed that algae scrubbers were one of the best filtration methods, as they naturally attack the problem of phosphate and nitrate. If you are treating your tank for either, maybe give one of these a try.

I've been using algae scrubbers for years, and I swear by them. Actually, I have been following Santa Monica from the beginning. I have been wanting to upgrade to one of the Surf scrubbers but they are way too expensive right now. I really like how easy they are to clean. If they come down in the future, I'll be all over them.

I know you will love your scrubber when it really starts growing. Your nutrients will always test at zero with conventional test kits.

+1 for update. I had one but it didn't work well at all. I wonder if they have gotten better.

I have been running one for approx 6 months. It didn't start well until I found out if you are getting slime algae you need to scrub it out. The slime algae prevents the good hair algae from taking hold. After 2 I had nothing. Then I took a toothbrush to it and then it kicked in gear. Now I pull a handful out every week.

I wouldn't say the surf is easy to clean. Those strings get really caked and every month or so I have to strip them down. You have to be careful or you pull the string from unit.

Is it doing its job as far as phosphates and nitrates. What other filtration are you using with it?
