SWC 160 cone or SRO 1000?

I am in the process of getting items for my new build either DSA 105 or 110 rimless GreatLakes.Like your opinion on a skimmer so far i have 2 choices SWC 160 cone or SRO 1000.I have not bought a skimmer in 7 years last one was a EuroReef 6-2 that i use on my 60 cube.Any recommendations of the two or others i should think about.400.00 limit

I have swc 160 on a 120 and pretty heavy load and it can't keep up. Great skimmer but not for over 100 gal with a decent bio load

It wil be going on a 40b soon and will kick some butt!! Haha


Look at the vertex in-180 it's a nice skimmer buddy has one on his roughly 400 total gallon system and it pulls out some gunk!

I'd say neither. They are to close in relative size to what your tank is. I'd say you need to look bigger, like ones rated for 200-250g.

I had a SRO 1000 on my 110g with a 30g sump, and it worked like a charm. I traded for a SRO 2000 thinking I needed a larger skimmer, and it produced the same output as the SRO 1000. I would go with it, or the AquaMaxx EM100. I use that now.

I've heard more good things with build quality of the sro then the swc

Well I guess I'm the minority. My swc 160 cone does a brilliant job on my 150g total volume system. I have a medium size bio load, 8 fish in a SPS dominant. When people talk about quality issues with swc I wonder what is different than other skimmers of the same price point. The Atman pumps. I still don't see what is bad about these pumps versus other Chinese pumps of the same size. Maybe I just have a lot to learn. When I'm paying under $300 for a skimmer to handle around 100-160g what do I expect? Not a BK

Thanks for the input so far.There is one more skimmer i am thinking about and that is the SRO 2000.

Had another skimmer suggested to me.It is the Reef Octopus Diablo-DC 170.Anyone hear about these skimmers?They are new on the market
