This isn’t a high end piece but man is it weird and cool. I’m sure it was just an import chop but I’m digging it a lot!

After cutting the original frag off of the colony, I’m lucky that 2 branches have popped up on the cut line and BOTH have red in them. I was so happy to see that!

The original frag that I cut off of this colony is progressing. However, it is proving my theory correct. The green grows about 3X faster than the red. That’s probably why there are so many green frags available nowadays.

Thanks! Ya, you definitely need to come by again. Things have changed quite drastically since you were last here lol.
Lets see a pic of that frag. Is it marbled?

Oh Charlie..... I knew this day was gonna come. So I have good news and bad news. Let’s get the bad out of the way first. I randomly ran an ICP test just to see where the system was at. It came back that my sg was 1.0285! For some reason, the calibration fluid I have been using for 3 years with no trouble suddenly increased!? I threw that bottle out and ordered 2 new calibration fluids and tested them against each other to make sure they match so that I always have a good solution. That problem is fixed now.

At the same time, I was having a bad cyano outbreak. As I’ve mentioned before, I really try not to add anything to the system that you can’t test for. I don’t do aminos, trace elements, etc. I just feed the fish and depending on where my nutrients are I may dose a bit of Benereef or Reef Roids. But, this cyano was really getting out of hand so I decided to dose Chemiclean. I have had good success with it in the past, even with Speciosa in the system and never had any troubles. Well, that wasn’t the case this time. I have had several corals bleach (but not die) in only 2 spots in my system. 1 was where the Cpt. Crozier, Flaming Sunrise, Jumanji and Mr Freeze sit. The other was where my Avengers, Fruitloops, Insanity, Prom Queen sit. They have all lost color and are struggling since the Chemiclean. Everything else in the whole 2 tank system has never skipped a beat. Since the WC after the Chemiclean I have even added a Brain Freeze and another Mr. Freeze and both of those corals are doing fantastic as you can see below. So I am extremely annoyed, frustrated and a little ticked off. This hobby can be really humbling....

Now the positive, The Jumanji and Legoland do not seem to have been phased by the issue. Both still have nice color and decent PE. I’ve got some other pieces cooking that don’t seem to be effected either so, let’s hope it stays that way. During this whole fiasco, I realized that I have never had any bleaching issues in the tank that uses the T5 hybrid. Although I don’t get colors as nice as over the Ocean Revives, the corals are extremely healthy and have done nothing but thrive. So, I am beginning to wonder if there is not a hot spot in the blue spectrum in those 2 locations under the Ocean Revives that are causing my problems. 2” away for these “bleached“ locations, corals are fine.....

Enough of my babbling....

These 2 are struggling pretty bad

This is my original Mr Freeze. Definitely a bit bleached out, but still alive and looks to be trying to heal along the growth edge

These 2 were added after the Chemiclean. They’re thriving!

Sorry to hear about the struggles but at least they’re still alive and recovering. I’ve dosed chemiclean several times now and my speciosa and Tenuis have never been bothered. FWIW my tank did not like benepets. I know some systems love it but that wasn’t the case for me.

Thanks Charlie. I know it comes with the territory but it’s frustrating.

Can you elaborate on why your system didn’t like Benepets? What happened? I’ve only been using it for a couple weeks.

Moderate polyp retraction across the board and I lost a no name Malaysian Tenuis I had for over a year. Did a good sized water change and threw the benepets in that cabinet. You know that cabinet? Where the stuff we don’t use go to die. Thinking of the full retail value of all the crap in there makes me want to….never mind. Anyways

Maybe it wasn’t the benepets. I’ll just stick with frozen mysis and cyclopods.

You’re making me second guess using it now. I wonder if it didn’t play a part in whatever happened.

All you have is a cabinet? You’re not trying hard enough! I have a whole storage rack in the basement with equipment and odds and ends that will probably never be used again. Although, I did just finally get my (2) 30g breeder frag tanks in for a new build I’m gonna start on. So maybe some of that stuff can be put to use in that!

It’s actually a cabinet in a spare room filled with a bunch of other aquarium crap and a closet.

I’m not sure there’s anything wrong with benepets. I just believe all of those “coral foods” fuel other organisms before the corals get a chance to utilize them.

Why did you start it in the first place? Some one told me it gave their corals better PE….so I tried it. I’m guilty of chasing things sometimes myself

That’s exactly why I decided to try it. People claimed to get better PE and health using it without the negative PO4 effects....

Thanks for checking in Charlie, appreciate it. After going back thru our conversation here, I am thinking it was the higher par and high salinity that had those pieces teetering in the edge and then the Chemiclean pushed them over. I will likely lose the BKChem Cpt Crozier and the BKChem Flaming Sunrise based on how they are looking. I’ve got my fingers crossed on the recovery of all the other Speciosa. Jumanji doesn’t appear to have skipped a beat thankfully. The Insanity & Prom Queen appear to be getting some color/highlights back as well as some PE.

In general, I’ve always had good color, good health and decent growth rates on my 2 tank system but since I fixed the SG, all my large growout colonies have really taken off with not only growth and PE but the color is really popping! Once the lights come in I’ll try to snap some FTS’s.
