Tang ID pls

I bought this fish, labeled as a lavender tang.

In the fish store, he was a pale purplish grey... now he’s this color:

Any ideas? Thanks!

Hard to tell by the pic, but looks nothing like my Lavender

White tail tang? Though the face looks like a. Acanthurus tang to me

Lavender tangs also have tons of color variation maybe @eatbreakfast @4FordFamily can help?

Lavender Tangs are also called brown Tangs and can be anywhere from ugly brown to a vibrant purple. It’s hard to tell from the lights but as long as that’s not a white tail it’s a lavender Tang

That’s an Acanthurus Thompsoni, not a lavender tang. It’s a relatively uncommon tang. Neat find! They get about 8-10 inches in captivity.

Agreed on A. thompsoni.

Another possibility is Acanthurus nigricauda (epaulette tang). Mine looked a lot like yours did when he was smaller. The black bar behind the eye is what stands out to me. This will become a lot more pronounced/defined as the fish matures if you do have a juvenile A. nigricauda.
