Unfortunately no tangs can live long term in a 55. The smallest accepted size for a yellow is a 75, but even then bigger is better.
Look into dwarf and Pygmy angelfish, they are a good substitute for tangs in smaller tanks.

Would a yellow tang be ok in a 55 gallon? Is this a dumb question ?!
You wont find one larger than 3" right now and should be fine

I think you'd know the answer to that question if you see how active tangs are. For now, you could have a small tang in your tank, but when it gets 2" or more in size, you're going to want to get a longer tank for it.

If you have a definite plan for it, then yes. if you are thinking "I might someday..." I would say no. I had 3 tangs in my 55, but I knew that I would either move them into my 180 or into a larger tank if I upgraded.

I think people are publicly against tangs in small tanks because we don’t trust the normal hobbyist to be responsible. If you have a smaller tank and get an appropriate size tang of the appropriate breed and have a plan in place to rehome it when it gets too big, that will be fine.

A yellow tang isn’t a bad suggestion of a tank that size. If you’re going to get the right size (pretty small) and absolutely going to rehome it, then yes I think it’s okay. I’ve had a scopas (1.5”ish) in a 25 gallon and he was fine, just need to be aware of the limitations and be responsible. If you see them stress or show aggression then you have to move them.

Thank you all for the advice! I plan on getting a small one and selling it once it gets larger. Appreciate not calling the tang police on me!
