Looking into getting a very small tank for some shrimp and maybe a frog if possible. Freshwater I mean. I’m talking a 1-3 gallon tank for a desk. I have also heard that if you would get certain plants you don’t have to do water changes or actually feed the shrimp? How much of this is true and what experiences have you guys had with tanks like this?

You’re going to need something a little bigger for an African frog. 5 gals would be preferred.

I don’t know about not feeding the shrimp but you can definitely add plants to reduce water changes. Plants like duckweed and Javamoss will help, but there’s tons of more plants that will work.

In my experience you'll need to still feed the shrimp. And I'm a big advocate of weekly water changes. I had a shrimp only tank for a while and they really liked to hang out on the roots of floating plants. I'm sure there was some microbial life for them to eat but it's not enough.

Something like shrimp + Java moss + duck weed + least killifish (heterandria formosa) would be nice. None of these should harm the other. Should go nicely together and if you do it correctly, the plants will grow in thick and the shrimp and least killifish will spawn like crazy.

Honestly, in such a small tank, I'd go with either the shrimp or the least killifish.
Malaysian trumpet snails might be an option to add some diversity as well.
