Hello everyone I hope you guys can help. I have had my tank overfill my display twice today. I have the redsea 250g2. The first time i believe it was because my Red Sea ato dumped 4 gallons of rodi water and now my overflow is full. Do I just need to open the valve? I’ve opened it a couple of times but the water is not going down

You may have a clogged primary drain pipe… water is going down the emergency drain at more or less the same rate, regardless of what you do with the valve on the primary drain, right?
Water is slowly going down the emergency drain pipe and I have opened the gate valve a couple of times. I have included a video

I’m sorry, I can only see the video via the R2R app, which I’m not using at the moment!

Has this tank been up and running for a while before this happened? If so, it’s definitely a clog in the primary drain! — likely a snail or other critter!

Likely from the bottom, can you stick something in the pipe to probe for a clog?

Is your return pump adjustable? If so, turn it down or off and trouble shoot. Either the pump is too high for your downspout, The valve is caked up and needs a cleaning, or you have a snail or something lodged in the main drain down pipe.

Unless I’m missing another possibility.

How full is your sump? If your ato dumped too much water in your tank and your sump is full then your display has noWhere to go.

If opening (turning to the left) your main drain gate valve doesn’t lower the water inside your weir so it doesn’t flow into the emergency drain, then you might need to drain some water from your sump… but again it all depends on how high the water level is in your sump after your ato dumped into it. Otherwise you should be ok with 3xtra water inyour sump and just need to adjust your gate valve accordingly to get your weir level lowered.

The clog is likely at the primary drain bulkhead, or just before the primary drain valve…

Best bet is to unscrew the primary drain union under the tank, then push a long rigid object up into the plumbing to see if you can push out the clog the way it came in!

Hi there! This tank was set up in December, so it’s been running for a couple of months now. The water level finally started dropping after opening my Redsea valve so that's good. Do you think the ATO failing and the overflow being too high might have caused the overfill in my display?

Yes, when the ATO raised the water level in the return pump chamber substantially, the return pump started moving more water than normal back to the display!

This in turn made the water level in the display rise until the emergency drain took over and did its job as intended! — you resolved the issue by opening the primary drain valve more to compensate for the increased return pump flow rate!

thanks the water has lowered in the overflow box. Any ato that you would recommend? The Redsea ato has done this to me 3x already :( have been looking at the Neptune ato and tunze ato.

Thanks now to Bring my salinity back up. Any ato that you would recommend? The Redsea ato has overfilled my tank 3x already and I just cleaned the sensor yesterday:( have been looking at the Neptune ato and tunze ato.

My Tunze osmolator 2 (the old one, not the new one with lots of negative reviews) has been an absolute workhorse for me for around a decade!! I have run the pump dry countless times, and even accidentally dropped the controller in the sump once!! — the darn thing refuses to die, even with programming pins corroding off the circuit board! (Re: dunked in saltwater)

I know I’ve been consistently impressed with mine!

Shut your return pump off. As long as you have a wave maker going you will be fine as you trouble shoot. Make sure you are paying attention if your heater and probe are not both in your sump. Meaning, if the sensor is in the display and heater in your sump, eventually your heater will kick on.

You very likely have a clog, like a snail or something

I don’t think this is an ATO issue. I think you haven’t dialed in your return pump flow and the valve. The valve could be dirty. Have you cleaned the diaphragm in the valve since December? I do mine once every 6 weeks. Only take 3 minutes.

The ATO is dumping because your valve needed to be opened to keep the level at desired in your return chamber. Once you get that dialed in, you won’t get the big dumps. So your ATO is doing what it’s supposed to do. No sense throwing good money at bad money, unless you really want to.

I’ve heard it was great. I looked for a used one, but no one sells them, just run them into the dirt.

The new one is slick but I don’t trust lasers unless they are attached to sharks….

I kid you not… this thing still functions after sitting with salt water drops in it for at least a year!

If anyone is interested, I have a used Tunze 5017 I got in a tank tear down. I assume it works fine, but I have never used it. I’d gladly take it back and refund yiu if it doesn’t work as expected.

I’d let it go for $75 plus shipping cost to your location
