Since most clownfish are tank raised, are the odds pretty decent that a clownfish will hiss a nem?

Any methods of improving the odds? I was wondering about the pond baskets that stores have attached to the top of the tanks, if I out a clown and nem in it for a few days?

Usually they host from my experience. Seen some posts from a few that have some oddballs, but most go for a BTA! I just let my clowns find the nem. They usually find it pretty fast except for my pair in my 125

I dont have them in the tank yet. The store is holding them more me as well as a red BTA. They are ocellaris. Basically black and white with orange on the face.

Ocellaris have the least natural drive to host, in my experience. Skunks/ clarkis have the highest and perculas in the middle.

To be hosted is a natural instinct for clownfish. It is not bred out by being a few generations sans anemones. If given the opportunity to bond with a natural host, it's not at all hit-or-miss, emphasis on natural host. Some species of clownfish are more specialist, and only are found in one or two of the 10 host species of anemone. Others, such as clarki, are found in all 10 host species. Putting together non-natural symbionts (e.g. ocellaris or percs and BTAs) can be hit-or-miss. If you want a certain BTA host, choose a tomato, clarki, or a maroon pair.

I agree with that. I will say however that I see ocellaris in BTA's pretty much all of the time in stores.

I have had maroons in the past and too much attitude. :)

I have videos of my baby clownfish (percula) diving into their natural host anemone (gigantea) immediately upon introduction. As previously mentioned, this behavior is innate.

For ocellaris, you'll want to find yourself a H. magnifica, S. gigantea, or S. mertensii. The challenge is finding a healthy one, or getting it through the quarantine process, that often involves antibiotics.

I wanted a RBTA and not a carpet. I have had BTA's in there past when I kept maroon clowns.

However I stopped down to my LFS this afternoon and saw a nice pair of Allard Clowns, and.......

Yes, when RC went offline, I didn't switch over here. But I never stopped keeping my tanks and anemones, in fact I still have the same old ones I had back then. I'm glad to see you and Orion, Bradley and some of the other knowledgeable anemone keepers have been educating and suggesting helpful tips to newby anemone keepers. There seems to be an endless need for experienced anemone keepers to pass on information to new keepers.

Wow! That's a great find. And, a sure bet for BTAs. They're in the clark complex, so realistically they would probably go in most any host, but BTA is a definite yes.

Thanks.

I’m just getting back into the hobby after a long hiatus. I also was a long-term member Reef Central. It’s sad to see it’s no more basically.
