I am looking for ideas on products to use that are not wood that others have used to skin the outside of their stands. I like the idea of a panel that spans the whole length of the tank and would come off easily for sump maintenance. I would really like to avoid having to stain or paint anything but still want something that looks half decent.

You could go with a solid panel of acrylic in pretty much whatever color you want (frosted, florescent, metallic etc) and mount it with magnets.

Phenolic resin, Corian counter top material, cultured marble, acrylic (as mentioned) all possible. There are some very nice decorative panels made for room partitions, etc., look up Marlite or Lumicor.

There's also fake rock panels at Home Depot that look nice, in tile-format. Also real cut rock tiles are beautiful but 15-18$ per square foot. Made for kitchen back-splashes.

I'm cheap I went with 1/4 inch white panels that sell in 4x8 sheets for 30$. Eventually to mount unto it something better when the budget permits it.
Plastic-wood (white) for the borders. All at Home Depot.

Well my next aquarium stand is being made by Chris Benner of Sticks N Stones Aquarium furniture
He will made the finish of our living room furniture which is important to the Boss ( the Wife) as it is in HER LIVING ROOM bad enough that the aquarium has to be in HER LIVING ROOM
at least it will match her furniture which by the way cost way more than my aquarium.:) Here is an example of his work click on his name above to see more wonderful work the best.
