Doing a new tank build. I've had four saltwater tanks in my life; I wanted to get some pictures all in one place before starting the next one. It's been a long journey, and I feel I'm just now getting less bad at it. You'll see in the pics :D
First tank ever (also ironically my most successful). 16g Nuvo. Getting rid of this instead of moving it was stupid.
Second tank going through an early cycle. Mr Aqua 10 gallon iirc. Notice the freshwater plant light on top that breeds algae? That was silly. :D Only tank I've tried a sump with. This tank didn't last that long before I called it.
Third tank. 14g Nuvo. Almost a failure, refused to do water changes as an experiment, everything crashed, then eventually (months!) it cleared up once I grabbed all the algae that grew and removed it. Ended up breaking it down for my fourth thank. I still have the physical tank, but the pump died and I don't want to mess with it. It also really needs an ATO since it's small and there's no lid ($).
Fourth tank: 40g petco breeder. Love this tank. It has too much rock, but it was wet rock I got for free from someone off craigslist. It came completely infested with parasites. Awful, awful. This tank taught me that you don't mess around with hitchhikers. They're not cute. They're not fun. They're demoralizing.
So what has all my experience taught me? It's taught me how little I know about this hobby. :) It's also taught me the importance of quarantine, which leads me to...
Tank build #5: 32g LED Biocube. Carib Sea argamax sand, biocube UV sterilizer, biocube protein skimmer, nicrew classicLed aquarium light and timer (will velcro to back for chaeto, and put on opposite timer to help stabilize ph at night). This tank will be where all new things go for a period of time before going into my main 40g display tank (take that, hitchhikers!) I'm also now going to be dipping Every. Single. Coral.
Once this tank is set up, I'm going to move my critters from my 40g to the 32g (there aren't that many of them) and nuke the 40g. No more hitchhikers! While I'm at it, I'll probably drill the 40g and build a nice refugium setup. That'll be a build later this year.
Tank should get here next thu, the 25th.
