Not sold on spending $1,000 on a Apex just yet.

That being said I would like to add a good temperature controller.

Any suggestions on a good stand alone temp controller?

I've used this in different versions for 30+ years, no issues. For reef keeping , diy smoker,etc...
Just coat temp sensor if not coated

I would 2nd the Ranco, bulletproof and last forever.
I've used a few on and off during the past 12 years and they still operate fine.

I currently use an Aqua Medic T controller twin, as basically a redundancy.

I previously had the "old version" with buttons, and it failed leaving my heater on while I was away. Luckily my tank sitter could put ice in the tank until I could get home and discover the fault.

The new one looks and feels like much higher quality, and has yet to skip a beat on me. But as with all temperature controllers, redundancy is key and I'd never rely solely on one temperature sensor.

Ink bird works just as good as Ranco. And is plug and play for 35 dollars. Check the accuracy of any temp controller at least weekly if not daily with a thermometer. Nothing is in this hobby should be trusted 100%.

FWIW I have an APEX but still use a Ranco to control my heater. I have much more faith in the Ranco.

If price is an issue start with Ink bird, then when possible go with Ranco, that's similar to many items I purchased before affording the better stuff. My thinking
