I had a 180 in-wall tank, the back of it being in the mechanical room of a brand new house.
Within 3 years the gas pipes and duct work were showing surface rust. I attribute this mainly to a period of time where the ATO was not functioning properly leading to a LOT of micro bubbles being injected into the tank (by the return pump) when the water level dropped in the return section of the pump.
