I got sick of trying to pry the magnet away as well when I wanted it to freely slide a bit more, I just keep a small square of paper towel between outside magnet and glass. Never had an issue with the magnet moving on its own and its easy to slide around. My glass is 1/2".

Don't forget to clean the contact surface on the wet side too. That will keep it sliding freely, excluding the static cling on the dry side which doesn't stick all that hard.
Believe me, during the past years I’ve cleaned the wet side. The “static cling” is the surprise of my lifetime. Lol
 

Freshwater filter only or is it? Have you ever used an HOB filter on a saltwater tank?
