The Pond Has Started

Here is our summer project.

So far its 14 ft on the deep end and 3 feet deep in the middle. The other end 8 ft across and 2 feet deep tapering to nothing .We might go Wider

OK I'm not sure if I got it right 14' at the deep end and 3' at the middle or 14' long 8' cross and 3'deep in the middle.

Please don't tell me the shovels shown are the tools used ti dig such a big pond !

Just make sure the liner fold is tight and glued, you could also use carpet pad as an underlay

there are shovel marks at the side plus she's a very strong GAL

Not all dug by hand. but will finish it up and level the Soil around it by hand.. Going to create a landscaped Island area .

It might end up being bigger.. We are in no rush to get this done.. Just want it ready for next year

Yes, not afraid of work. But Digging holes is not my specialty.The shape work that is done so far was by hand..

Make it deeper ! Please show us the build . Freshwater ponds are very cool ! Iv'e had several over the years mine were above ground .

It is a Dirty Hole no matter how you comment on it.. And thanks..

Bad news its Raining , i Was gonna pick up some plastic to cover the hole but did not make it to my Insulation Supplier in time . Because of this WORK Thing. Will pump the water out tomorrow and hope it dries .

Agree with deeper, ive lost fish to raccoons in 2 feet, evil fluffy things with hand claws. if near the shore like me you will want at least the center to be over 4’ to avoid predation from birds.

Very nice I have a 200 gallon pond with koi and goldfish and we get always get a few wild frogs every year

Yep, herons were terrible on my last pond, lost a number of koi to them.
That pond was built before I moved in, I redid/redug to 3' plus and problem solved

only big birds we see are Owls and and Chicken hawks.We do have a Raccoon that lurks about. The Deep area will be more then 3 feet deep . Filtration will be Custom made.

Like our Aquariums the plan is to make it as Maintenance free as we can.. More time to enjoy then work on . The Best times to work on this project are also my Busiest times work wise. My plan is to have this ready to put into service and start stocking some in the spring of next year. We are doing a lot of other outside projects at the same time.

We have been wanting to do this for 12 years, either no time or not the right time financially.

It seems i cant get a break.. it stopped raining Friday night and was almost dried up enough to cover it by Sunday after pumping the water out... I said i would cover it Monday before heading out to work.. We have had Thunder storms all night and Flash flood watch.........

Good to hear no wading birds. I have to cover mine spring and fall or i lose fish.

Some experiences i have had with reducing maintenance with my pond.
Plants will help a lot. But make sure thing like cat tails are contained. Only use permanent bonds like pvc cement what needs to be. Theres a lot of debris that falls into a pond, years of bacteria film and suddenly leaves get stuck in an elbow you cant get to and flow stops. I dont care for pond snails, they dont help a lot with cleaning ime. And after an outbreak of black ich, will make sure my pond is always snail free.
You cant control the light or all nutrients so a uv will greatly help with floating algae doesnt really matter where in your plumbing it goes even if the manufacturer says before the filter, will keep water clear even if on a stand alone pump and fountain.
