The Wrasse Lover's Thread!

I had a peppermint shrimp decide that LPS corals tasted good and he ate 2 heads of hammer and 4 or 5 polyps of acan

Yup.

Depends on the age of the checkerboard. If it's an adult, that's likely to be an expensive snack.
Oh dear, I'm so disappointed with myself. I do have a Checkerboard and purchased two peppermints the other day. I guess I'm just used to reef safe wrasses...the thought didn't even cross my mind. Agggh what was I thinking. :(

ok i put 3 leopard wrasse in my dt tank on friday one went straight in the sand and the other two went later that night, they still have come back out of the sand but my turning male blue star chases them around. should i be worried yet? i have an ornate and a turning male leopard right now
I am still a bit confused; what species are in play here? You have an existing male bipartitus (blue star), and you added 3 more leopards of what species? One of the three new ones is an ornate?

Hey, I have a feeling this is going to sound stupid but I figured I would ask anyway. :P You know how Moray Eels specifically won't eat Cleaner Shrimp because they know of their benefit. Do you think the Checkerboard Wrasse would be the same way?

Would he eat the Peppermints because he knows that they are not beneficial, but maybe leave the cleaners alone? I highly doubt it but figured I would ask. Thanks. :)

If you are served grilled prawns, do you pay much attention to the size? :p

In most cases, chasing will settle down quickly. The exceptions are if any of the new fish are males or are close to transitioning into a male.

All the new leopards looks like female, I just came home and none are out yet
Did you use a social acclimation box. They often help lessen aggression on introduction.

No I didn't cause I only had a regular one, that same leopard chase a small potters wrasse into my filter for a week brought him to 2 more tanks until fish stop chasing it but died a few days later

Gotcha.
It would not be the first time someone has had an established male blue star that is intolerant of any new leopards, and especially females of the same species (the female blue star you've added).

Based on that prior experience and using it as a barometer for your existing male blue star, I feel adding more leopards is likely to have the same result.

Let me ask again, I still haven't seen my new leopards wrasse since Friday should I be worried?

Long story short... Get one that looks healthy and looking for food at your LFS. Or if you buy online get it from some reputable retailers. You could have one that refuses to acclimate to captivity and will perish in the sand like my first Blusestar.

When my LFS got several of these blue star, they were all hiding in the sand. Which is expected and healthy. Knowing these get sold quickly, I requested to buy one while it was still in the sand. Bad idea.... It continues to hide till this day.

My two leopard wrasse (melagris, Blusestar) that I have now were all eating at the LFS. At first introduction, they don't hide in the sand right away and will slowly adjust to the time zone. But will come out of the sand everyday to eat.
