Love radiant wrasses! I want 1, but never see them locally anymore.

That's a female M. meleagris.

It changes colors completely when it transitions to a male. Plus, at that small of a size it is almost assuredly a female.

Males ship poorly, so I would want to see it swimming normally and eating.

If you really want another, go with another small female.

Interestingly I've never seen a male melagris for sale, granted I've only been looking for 2 years but male bipartus, choati, and kuiteri are readily available.

How likely is it for an initial phase pencil wrasse to turn male in captivity? Particularly in the presence of other wrasses like fairies, flashers, and leopards.

TJ has better experience here than I, but I have a feeling he's going to say it likely will not if any of the other wrasses are dominant over it. And given that mix, one probably will be.

Yeah, they're pretty passive. I've only seen one instance of a female transitioning into a male. Usually males revert to submale/female coloring when surrounded by other dominant wrasses. However, it seems more sensitive to this happening with other sand burying wrasses rather than fairies and flashers.

Thanks, guys. I've been hoping for a small tail pencil wrasse and saw an initial phase one is coming up in today's divers den, but I'll pass and hold out for a terminal male.

It would share a tank with a few fairies: flame, orange back, and labouti, as well as an initial phase blue star leopard. I don't have any of the others yet; this is a tank I'm just beginning to stock. If the pencil stays blue and green, it'll be a very nice contrast to the others.

If the coloring reverts back to female/sub-male, it could go into my other display, but there will be flashers and a Lubbock's fairy in there, so it might not be any better. Hmmm.
