Hello all,
My name is Adam and I am from south Louisiana. Wanted to share my 120g mixed reef tank with you all here. Hope you enjoy!
The Tank
Planet Aquariums 120 gallon rimless
external overflow
48"x24"x24"
I ordered the tank on Monday, June 17th 2013 and it was delivered Wednesday, June 26th 2013!
The tank sets on a 2" square tubing steel stand that I built.
I built the stand myself:
Here's what I started with
I ground out 45° corners on all the pieces clamped it together and started welding
I didn't want the tank sitting on the square tubing so I fabricated a few quick leg extensions. I cut 1" pieces from one of my drops and added half inch plate to make a little cube. I found some rubber feet with threaded holes, welded a bolt to the underside of the cube and screwed the rubber foot onto the bolt.
This will also help with leveling the tank, my work wasn't perfect so having the ability to raise or lower each corner will come in handy. Here's a shot of it welded on the frame.
Got it all finished up and didn't waste a bit of time. Straight to the weight test! ****
Grabbed a rough casting of one of our parts that weighs 1800lbs!
Let the part sit without the cranes help for about 15 minutes I even tried to shake it a bit. Didn't budge!
Only thing left was to prime and paint.
And set it in place!
The top piece for the tank to set on, cut to size and painted black
The bottom piece, cut to size and notched for the support beams
And painted white!
I set the pieces on the stand, but I still need to secure the top piece and put a brace across the bottom to support the plywood for the sump to sit on
Thanks for looking!
Well! When the tank came in, I was so excited to get it.. but when I walked in the door.. the first thing I noticed.. It WASN'T rimless!
I was pretty upset, but due to me moving out of my house I didn't really have a choice but to keep the tank and deal with the issue.
Aqua Hut, the LFS who I ordered the tank through, was very helpful and apologetic. Even though it was not their screw up. It was Planet Aquariums fault, they loaded the wrong tank on the truck.
Luckily, this tank was a rimless tank that they added a rim to by mistake.
So to solve the problem I simply removed the rim and John from the store came out and cleaned the silicone off the top. You can't even tell it was there.
Planet gave me a nice discount and John from Aqua Hut made sure I was taken care of.
So, anyway.. without further adieu, here are some pics!
What I really like about this tank is the external overflow, it's done really slick and it looks great. Not to mention it doesn't take up any room inside the tank.
This tank was being set up as my previous 120 was being broken down. I used most of the water from the old tank as well as the rock.
Thanks for looking! More to come!
